No-start diesels fall into a short list: no fuel, no air, no compression, no crank, or no signal telling the injectors to fire. We work through it in that order rather than throwing parts at it — checking cranking voltage and draw, fuel supply and return, filter restriction, air-in-fuel, and whether the ECM is actually commanding fuel. Cold snaps in Fort St. John expose weak batteries, gelled fuel and tired glow or grid heater systems more than anything else.

Check engine and warning lamps

An amber lamp is information, a red lamp is a request to stop. We can pull active and inactive codes on-site so you know which one you're looking at. Cooling system and overheating

Common causes are a failed water pump, a stuck thermostat, a leaking EGR cooler, a plugged radiator or charge air cooler, a slipping fan clutch, or coolant lost through a hose or seal. We pressure test, check fan operation and find the leak rather than topping it up and sending you down the highway.

  • A red warning lamp, rising coolant temperature or dropping oil pressure — shut down and call rather than driving to town.
  • The engine derated on its own and won't make full power, or speed is being capped.
  • It cranks noticeably longer than it used to, especially cold, or needs a boost to start.
  • White or blue smoke that wasn't there last week, or a strong fuel smell around the engine.
  • Coolant, fuel or oil visibly dripping onto the ground where the truck parks.
  • A DEF or emissions warning with a countdown or mileage limit displayed.
  • The engine surges, misses under load or shudders at idle.
  • You've already had a code cleared and the same fault came back.

Can you clear a derate on-site?

Sometimes. If the derate came from a fault we can repair in the field — a sensor, a connector, a dosing component, a coolant level issue — then clearing it after the repair is straightforward. If the underlying fault needs shop equipment, clearing the code alone just delays the derate coming back, and we'll tell you that rather than sell you a temporary fix.

Do you carry a scan tool for my engine?

Tell us the engine make and model when you call and we'll confirm before heading out. Coverage differs between engine families, and it's better to sort that out on the phone than after we arrive.

My truck won't start in the cold — is that a battery or a fuel problem?

Both are common in Fort St. John winters and they look similar from the cab. Slow, laboured cranking usually points at batteries, cables or a starter draw problem. Strong cranking with no fire points more at fuel — gelling, a restricted filter, air in the system, or a heater circuit that isn't working. Testing sorts it out quickly.
